As a Fire & Security Installation Engineer you will be expected to maintain a great relationship with both new and existing customers when installing and upgrading systems.

A fire & security systems apprentice will be a hands-on educational role where you will learn and develop skills in order to progress into a more senior fire & security systems role, preferably within the company. This job will involve both on and off the job training and experience which will help to equip the employee with all the skills they need. On the job they will work alongside our experienced engineers from our installation team and off the job training will involve several week blocks at college plus additional college work in your own time.

Local work with minimal travel. Due to continued growth we are now looking for the best-experienced engineers in the midlands to support our commercial and education customer base. As a commercial Fire & Security Service Engineer you will be expected to maintain a great relationship with our existing commercial/education customer base when visiting to rectify faults, carry out routine maintenance and extra work. There will also be the opportunity of progression to a lead engineer role.

“After completing my electrical installation Level 3 qualification at college, I started looking around for apprenticeships and came across MES Systems. The company really impressed me and I decided to join the firm.

“Over my three-year apprenticeship, I learned everything from access systems and intruder alarms to fire protection for both domestic and commercial clients, and was offered the role of junior engineer on completion. Crucially, the company totally supported me in developing my transferable people skills and helped me gain the confidence to speak to customers about the services and products we offer, as well as listening to their needs and coming up with solutions. MES has taught me a great level of professionalism.

“One of the biggest reasons for working in this field and for MES is the sheer variety. One day, I might be working on an alarm system in a house, the next, putting in security gates on an industrial estate. I’ve even worked in a zoo. There’s so much problem solving too, nothing is just simple, which really gets your brain working. What is fantastic is that all the engineers all get along with each other, there isn’t a ‘every man for himself’ culture, which is a testament to the company’s attitude to team working and their positive approach.

“We do one month in installation and one month in service to broaden our understanding of all areas of the business and our skillset and the beauty is that our M.D Richard will take the time to stop and update me on the company and my progress, he doesn’t need to, but does. It’s that family-run ethos.

“I started with MES in 2020. I was previously working for Chubb and had gone on maternity leave in 2019. Then, because of Covid, they closed the branch down and I was made redundant. My mum and dad used MES for their alarm system and when the engineer came out one day, they asked if there were any jobs. There were and it’s brought me to where I am today.

“The first months were tough as most people were working from home due to lockdown, but the company made sure we were all okay. They do really care about their employees. I job share with someone so I can work part-time and look after my son and recently, I had to change my childcare. They were really accommodating, not all companies would be. We also have a working from home policy, which makes it easier to achieve a better work life balance.

“Working for MES has also opened up other opportunities for me. In the summer, I was asked if I would consider being the company’s health and wellbeing champion as I had touched on this in previous employment. But MES are on another level when it comes to being proactive in this area. I’m a firm believer that if your staff are happy, they will perform better at work. It works both ways. At companies I’ve worked for before, you can be just a number.

“We started things off with a staff survey around health and wellbeing and being able to have a free health MOT was very important to many staff. Following our successful stop smoking support campaign to coincide with Stoptober, we linked up with the local Westfield House medical centre to carry out health MOTS, testing blood pressure, cholesterol etc, saving them £40-£50. We aim to do a campaign every month moving forward.
